Playing the long game is not just a strategy; it's a way of life

Mar 19, 2024

Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Gemma Sisia, Founder of The School of St Jude share her story transforming education opportunities for children living in poverty in Tanzania. What struck me most was the power of playing the long game. When Gemma opened the school in 2002 they started with just three students. Fast forward to today and The School of St Jude spans three campuses, providing education for 1800 students each year.

In a world filled with instant gratification and quick fixes, the concept of playing the long game often gets overshadowed. Yet, it is this very mindset that holds the key to sustainable success and fulfillment in both personal and professional endeavors. Playing the long game requires patience, persistence, and a clear sense of purpose. Let's delve deeper into why embracing this approach can lead to lasting rewards.

Playing the long game is about patience. It's about understanding that meaningful progress takes time and that overnight success is often an illusion. Whether it's building a career, nurturing relationships, or pursuing personal goals, significant achievements seldom happen overnight. Instead, they are the result of consistent effort and perseverance over an extended period. By cultivating patience, we allow ourselves the space to grow, learn from setbacks, and stay committed to our long-term vision.

To play the long game, persistence is key. It's about staying the course even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. Inevitably, there will be challenges along the way – moments of doubt, setbacks, and failures. However, when we play the long game we understand that these obstacles are not roadblocks but rather stepping stones on the path to success. A long game mindset helps us to embrace failure as an opportunity to learn, adjust their strategies, and keep moving forward with unwavering determination.

At the heart of playing the long game lies a clear sense of purpose. Knowing why you're pursuing a particular goal or endeavor provides the motivation and resilience needed to stay committed for the long haul. Purpose gives meaning to our actions and helps us prioritize what truly matters amidst life's distractions and temptations. Whether it's making a difference in the lives of others, leaving a lasting legacy, or simply finding fulfillment in our own journey, a strong sense of purpose fuels our perseverance and sustains us through the ups and downs.

Lastly, playing the long game fosters a mindset of sustainability and responsibility. It encourages us to make decisions that prioritize long-term benefits over short-term gains, whether it's in business, finance, health or family.

Playing the long game is not just a strategy; it's a way of life. It requires patience, persistence, and purpose – qualities that may not always lead to immediate gratification but ultimately pave the way for lasting success and fulfillment. So, let's embrace the journey, stay focused on our long-term goals, and trust in the power of playing the long game to create meaningful and lasting impact in our lives and beyond.
