Why Are People Really Leaving Their Jobs in 2025?
Feb 26, 2025
A recent study from Gallup has found the number one reason employees are taking a new job is work-life balance and personal wellbeing.
Work-life balance has been a hot topic for years, but it’s no longer just about managing time - it’s about managing energy, mental health, and overall wellbeing. More people are realising that flexibility alone isn’t enough if they’re still burnt out, disengaged, or struggling to maintain their physical and emotional health.
π According to Gallup, here’s what workers are prioritising when considering a job move:
- 59% want better work-life balance and personal wellbeing
- 54% want higher income and better benefits
- 54% want stability and job security
- 48% want to do work that plays to their strengths
Here’s what I see happening:
β¨ High-achievers are hitting burnout because they haven’t learned to set up systems for sustainable success
β¨ Leaders are losing top talent because they aren’t creating an environment where employees consciously build self-leadership skills
It’s not just about offering more money. It’s about designing work in a way that is sustainable, strengths-based, and human-centred.
So here’s the question:
π If you’re an employee, are you in an environment that actually supports these priorities? And if not—what’s your plan?
π If you’re a leader, are you building a culture where people don’t feel the need to leave to find what they’re looking for?
π Employees: If you want to feel in control of your career, ask yourself:
- What matters most to me at this stage?
- Am I maximising my strengths in my role?
- What needs to shift—my job or how I approach life more broadly?
π Leaders: If you want to attract and retain top talent, ask yourself:
- Are you offering meaningful flexibility and wellbeing support?
- How are you helping people to build their self-leadership capacity?
- Have you structured roles so people can do what they do best every day?
π The best workplaces in 2025 will be the ones that understand and adapt to these priorities.
What do you think - are organisations keeping up with what employees really want?
- What is something your organisation does well to support work-life balance and wellbeing?
- What’s one meaningful change leaders could make to create a workplace where people want to stay?
Would love to hear your thoughts. Let’s start a conversation about what great organisations look like in 2025.
